Lukas Kriem, team leader of the appliances contest, has an important job: to find the most efficient appliances for the Solar Decathlon house.
The appliances contest is one of 10 contests team Shelter to be judged at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon this year. The team has to find the environmentally efficient appliances that meet specific regulations stated by the DOE. These appliances include a washer and drier, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer.
The team has been able to find all of these appliances. The process involved extensive research to make sure that the devices meet DOE specifications. “We were done with the research around October last year. We used Energy Star who had a list of all the possible appliances that are out there.” said Kriem
The team worked by making a list of the appliances, and moved along by comparing the devices according to their energy efficiency, price, and specifications that met the DOE requirements.
The appliances were generously donated through our sponsors and the Solar Shower fundraising event.
